Generations

It would be difficult and confusing to speak of the 2nd generation of McClendons in America without understanding their relationships to members of the Bush Family. For that reason, it is wise to preface the details of that generation with not only a description, but a chart, as the relationships are complex.

The Bush Family

Stepping back a bit along the maternal line, we find Martha Hill, the great-grandmother of Dennis III, Mary, and Elizabeth. Martha was a native of Isle of Wight, Virginia. For reasons unknown, at the age of 12, Martha  gave birth to her first child, a daughter she named Mary. One would expect a 12-year-old to take a long break after bearing a child and Martha did. With her 7-year-old Mary in tow, Martha married William Bush in 1672. In 1675, at the age of 22, she started having children again, bearing an additional two sons and five daughters. In the midst of raising this family they relocated south to Chowan County, in Carolina Province.

The Bush family became friends with the Macklendons, having several children near in age to each other. It was there, in 1683, at the age of 18, Martha’s eldest daughter, Mary, had a daughter with her new husband John Early. They named the girl Margaret. This was the lovely lady who married Dennis Macklendon II in 1700.

Martha’s last two daughters were named Elinore, born in 1691, and Elizabeth, born in 1693, and though they were likely half-sisters to Martha’s eldest daughter Mary, they were 25 and 28 years younger than Mary.  Their niece, Margaret, would have been a decade older than them. Keep Elinore and Elizabeth in mind because they will figure prominently in the Macklendon family very soon. The chart below should help disentangle the relations among these family members as they progress.

Next: Francis & Elinore
