Youmans Generations/Migration

Christopher Yeamans, the immigrant from Middlesex, England, made his way through most of his life in Hempstead, Long Island. He dealt with the struggles of the era between native people, the Dutch, and his native English. He and his family, facing many adversities from nature and humanity, made a living raising cattle among other farming activities. His son Solomon, my ancestor, married a woman named Susannah Ferguson and had five children. in Madnen’s Neck, Hempstead.

About 1719, Christopher, his children and some of his grandchildren moved from Hempstead northward across the Long Island Sound and a few miles inland to Rye, New York Province (became White Plains in 1788), just west of the Connecticut border. In 1720, Solomon died at the age of 49/50. In that same year Solomon’s son, Samuel, now 20 years of age, moved about 40 miles north, roughly along the east side of the Hudson River, to Fishkill. A year later, in 1721, Christopher died in Rye at the age of 82/3.

Solomon’s son along my Youmans line was named Samuel and was born back in Hempstead in 1700. His father and grandfather now dead and gone, he moved about 40 miles farther up and across the Hudson to Albany County where he married Elizabeth Steenback in 1728.

European settlement began in the region around Chesapeake Bay and in the Northeast, then spread south and west into the Appalachian Mountains. The map above shows the Dutch population which started on Manhattan Island, and Long Island, in the southeast of their region of presence. Note that most of the Dutch movement inland proceeds northward up the Hudson River. This is the path the first four Youmans generations followed until Anthony Youmans Jr., made a major shift about 1,000 miles southwest to South Carolina. This move occurred between 1769 and 1783 during the tumultuous time of the American Revolution. Thus far, I have found no information explaining the motivation for such a distant move, but I’m sure a great story was there.
